Burgh Man Day in Pittsburgh

A certificate was presented to Burgh Man by City Council President Gene Ricciardi, proclaiming October 8, 2002 to be "Burgh Man Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

The Proclamation reads as follows:

WHEREAS, Burgh Man, Pittsburgh's Black and Gold Caped Crusader, works to open the minds of children to their gifts and talents and encourages them to use them to the fullest extent; and

WHEREAS, Burgh Man acts as a positive role model for the youth of Pittsburgh. He personifies all the good qualities of a wholesome lifestyle and is dedicated to advancing healthy activities such as juggling, magic, athletics, exercise, academics, computer skills, and building emotionally, socially and psychologically stable minds; and

WHERERAS, Burgh Man has taken a stand to eliminate the negative effects that alcohol, drugs, tobacco and violence play in the role of the family by urging children to take the Burgh Man Oath: "I promise to listen to my parents and teachers and not smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, take drugs or be violent. I will treat everyone with respect and I promise to become the best I can be"; and

WHEREAS, another of Burgh Man's important messages is to make known the wealth of Pittsburgh's gifts to history and its first accomplishments such as: the Polio Vaccine by Jonas Salk, the first drive in Gas Station (1912); the worlds first movie theater, the first Carnegie Library, the Ferris Wheel by George Ferris, and the Atomic Submarine Engine (1954) just to name a few; and

WHEREAS, no one knows where Burgh Man will next appear, yet, we do know that when he does, our children will find pride living in the City of Pittsburgh!

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends Burgh Man for recognizing Pittsburgh's leadership past and present and for instilling in the minds of our children a reinforcement of positive values.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that today, October 8, 2002 be known as "Burgh Man Day" throughout the City of Pittsburgh.
